Is it normal to forget more as you get older?

A name that will not come, a word on the tip of your tongue, the keys that were in your hand a minute ago. Many adults notice these moments more often after 50.

Often it is nothing serious. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) explains that recalling things more slowly, or now and then misplacing things or forgetting to pay a bill, are usually signs of mild, age-related forgetfulness [1].

The NIA lists the signs that it is time to talk with a doctor [1]:

  • Asking the same questions over and over.
  • Getting lost in places you used to know well.
  • Having trouble following recipes or directions.
  • Becoming more confused about time, people and places.

The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) puts supplements in context: a few trials of natural products have shown modest effects on cognitive decline, but direct evidence that supplements can prevent Alzheimer's disease or other dementias is lacking [2]. That is the honest backdrop for any brain supplement, Phytomem One included.

Two bottles of Phytomem One

What is Phytomem One and how does it work?

Phytomem One is a dietary supplement for adults who want to support memory, focus and mental clarity. The bottle says "30 Tablets" and the maker says to take one a day with food, so each bottle lasts a month. (The maker's FAQ calls it a capsule; the bottle says tablet.)

According to the maker, it works as a "dual-defense system" against two problems:

  • The "Plastic Stranglehold": the maker's name for microplastics building up in the brain. Saffron, fucoxanthin, fucoidan and olive leaf are meant to help neutralize it and calm inflammation.
  • "Type 3 Diabetes": the idea that brain cells stop using sugar well. Berberine, Ceylon cinnamon, banaba and kudzu flower are meant to help the brain fuel itself again.

Moro orange extract, which the maker says helps the body absorb the rest, and xylitol complete the formula.

What it is not: a prescription drug or a treatment for dementia. The FDA has not evaluated the maker's claims, and the maker's disclaimer says it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. The maker describes it as non-GMO, stimulant-free and 100% natural.

Do microplastics and "type 3 diabetes" really affect memory?

Both ideas behind Phytomem One come from real research, but the research says less than the sales page suggests.

Microplastics in the brain. A 2025 study in Nature Medicine measured tiny plastic particles in kidney, liver and brain tissue from people who had died [3]. The brain samples held plastic, levels were higher in 2024 than in 2016, and brains from people with dementia held even more. The study found plastic; it did not show that plastic causes memory loss, and it did not test any supplement. We found no study showing that any ingredient here removes plastic from the human brain.

"Type 3 diabetes". In 2008, two Brown University researchers reviewed evidence that problems with insulin signaling in the brain could explain many changes seen in Alzheimer's disease, and proposed the name "type 3 diabetes" [4]. It is a research idea, not a separate diagnosis, and much of the support comes from animal and lab studies.

What is in Phytomem One, and what does the research say?

The ingredient list comes from the maker's product page. The maker does not publish a Supplement Facts label, the amount of each ingredient or the other ingredients in the tablet, so the doses cannot be compared with the studies below. If you have allergies, ask support before ordering.

Saffron extract (Crocus sativus) · Amount not publishedThe best-studied ingredient here for the brain. A 2020 review of 4 small trials in people with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's found saffron improved memory test scores compared with placebo, but the authors said there are too few high-quality studies to recommend it. [5]
Fucoxanthin (sea kelp) · Amount not publishedA pigment from brown seaweed and some microalgae. In a 2024 trial, 43 adults around 64 who felt their memory slipping took 8.8 mg of fucoxanthin (from microalgae) or a placebo for 12 weeks. The authors report some gains in recall and attention, mostly over time rather than between groups. [7]
Fucoidan (sea kelp) · Amount not publishedA fiber-like compound from brown seaweed. The maker says it clears toxic protein buildup and cuts oxidative stress in brain tissue by up to 40%. We did not find human studies on fucoidan supplements and memory.
Oleuropein (olive leaf extract) · Amount not publishedThe main compound in olive leaves. A 2026 trial in 70 adults with mildly high blood pressure gave olive leaf extract plus potassium for 12 weeks; blood pressure and cholesterol came down and insulin sensitivity improved modestly. It did not test memory. [8]
Berberine HCl · Amount not publishedA plant compound. The NIH says it may modestly lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, that its most common side effects are digestive, that it can interact with medicines, and that it should not be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding. [9]
Ceylon cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum verum) · Amount not published"True" cinnamon. The NIH says research does not clearly support cinnamon for any health condition, including diabetes. Ceylon has only traces of coumarin, the cassia compound linked to liver problems. [10]
Corosolic acid (banaba leaf) · Amount not publishedIn a 2014 trial, adults with mildly high blood sugar who took 300 mg a day of banaba extract for 12 weeks had lower blood sugar than the placebo group. It did not test memory. [11]
Kudzu flower extract (Pueraria) · Amount not publishedA 2012 trial in 81 Japanese adults with obesity found kudzu flower extract lowered body mass index and belly fat over 12 weeks. We found no human studies on kudzu flower and memory. [12]
Morosil (Moro red orange extract) · Amount not publishedA branded extract of Sicilian Moro oranges. A 2015 trial in overweight adults taking 400 mg a day for 12 weeks reported lower weight and waist size than placebo. We found no studies showing it helps absorb other ingredients. [13]
Xylitol · Amount not publishedA sugar alcohol used as a sweetener. The FDA notes it is in many products for people, but warns it can be deadly for dogs, so keep the bottle out of a pet's reach. [14]

What to expect from Phytomem One, week by week

The maker says many users notice better clarity and recall "in just a few weeks". Nobody can promise when, or if, a supplement will help you. What you can control is how you test it, while the 60-day guarantee still covers you.

WhenWhat to doWhy
Day 1Take one tablet with breakfast, as the maker suggests. Write down 3 everyday things you want to improve, like finding words, remembering names or keeping your place while reading.A short note with concrete examples is your starting point. Without it, it is hard to tell later if anything changed.
Weeks 1–2Notice how your stomach handles it. Keep taking it with food.Digestive upset is the most common side effect of berberine, one of the ingredients.
Weeks 3–6Once a week, reread your note and score each item from 1 to 5.Studies on saffron and fucoxanthin ran for 12 weeks or more, so a few days is too early to judge.
Week 7–8Decide: keep going or ask for a refund. The guarantee lasts 60 days from delivery, and you pay the return shipping. Leave time to contact support and mail the bottles back.
Month 3 and afterIf you continue, review it with your doctor, especially if you take medicines.Berberine can interact with medicines, and several ingredients are studied for blood sugar.

Is Phytomem One safe? Side effects and when to ask a doctor

The maker says Phytomem One is non-habit-forming and gentle on the stomach, and its disclaimer says to consult a doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition. It does not list side effects. This is what the public sources say about the ingredients:

SituationWhy it mattersWhat to do
Upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea or constipationThese are the most common side effects of berberine. Large amounts of cinnamon can also cause stomach problems.Take it with food. If it does not settle, stop and ask your doctor.
Pregnant or breastfeedingThe NIH says berberine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.Do not take it unless your doctor says it is fine.
You take diabetes medicineBerberine, banaba and cinnamon have all been studied for lowering blood sugar. Together with medicine, that could push it too low.Ask your doctor first and check your blood sugar more often if you start.

You have a dog at homeThe tablets contain xylitol, which the FDA warns can be deadly for dogs.Keep the bottle closed and out of reach.
Memory problems that affect daily lifeGetting lost, repeating questions or growing confusion are signs to see a doctor, according to the NIA.See a doctor first. A supplement is not the answer here.

Who is Phytomem One for, and who should skip it?

Phytomem One can make sense for:

  • Adults with mild, everyday forgetfulness (names, words, keys) who want to add a daily supplement to healthy habits.
  • People interested in saffron, the ingredient here with the most human research on thinking and memory.
  • People who prefer a simple routine: one tablet with breakfast.

Better to skip it or ask a doctor first if you:

  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18.
  • Take diabetes medicine or other prescription medicines.
  • Have memory problems that affect daily life, or a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
  • Want to know the exact dose of everything you take. The maker does not publish it.
  • Want something that works in days. Phytomem One is meant for daily use over weeks.

Habits that help memory, with or without Phytomem One

A supplement works best on top of the basics. These are steps the National Institute on Aging suggests [1] [15]. Most cost nothing.

  • Learn a new skill and keep a daily routine.
  • Use memory tools: to-do lists, calendars and notes, and keep keys, phone and glasses in the same spot.
  • Get enough sleep: generally seven to nine hours a night.
  • Manage blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. High blood pressure in midlife is linked to cognitive decline later in life.
  • Ask about your medicines. Some can affect memory and sleep.
  • Treat hearing and vision loss, and reduce the risk of falls.
  • Limit alcohol and quit smoking.
  • Eat well: nutrient-dense foods, low in animal fats and high in fiber.

How much does Phytomem One cost, and which pack is the best deal?

Which one? 2 bottles is the smallest order, plus shipping from $9.95. The 3-bottle pack covers 90 days, longer than the guarantee, with free shipping. The 6-bottle pack is the cheapest per bottle but the biggest upfront cost. All packs include the 3 bonus e-books.

One detail: the "savings" shown on the order page ($302 and $434) do not match the crossed-out $99 price. Against $99 a bottle, the real difference is $120 on 3 bottles and $300 on 6.
